India strongly pushed back against Pakistan at the United Nations after Islamabad’s envoy raised the issue of Jammu and Kashmir during a General Assembly session. India accused Pakistan of repeatedly misusing UN platforms to further what it described as a divisive political agenda.
Delivering India’s national statement at the UN General Assembly Plenary on the report of the Secretary-General, Counsellor in India’s Permanent Mission to the UN Eldos Mathew Punnoose said Pakistan made an unwarranted reference to Jammu and Kashmir, calling it an integral and inalienable part of India. He said such remarks were detached from reality and unnecessary.
Punnoose underlined that while the right to self-determination is a fundamental principle of the UN Charter, it must not be misused to encourage secession in pluralistic and democratic states. He said Pakistan should refrain from resorting to baseless allegations and false narratives.
India’s response followed remarks by Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, who referred to Jammu and Kashmir during his address. New Delhi reiterated that Pakistan’s repeated attempts to internationalise the issue have failed to gain wider support within the global community.
Beyond the exchange, India also highlighted concerns of the Global South and questioned the UN’s effectiveness in addressing global conflicts. Punnoose said the organisation faces credibility challenges, especially in maintaining international peace and security, and urged decisive action to reduce global suffering.
